Sub-Zero Pro 48 refrigerator with a glass door built into kitchen cabinetry

The Sub-Zero PRO4850G is the 48-inch glass door model in Sub-Zero’s PRO Series: two doors, four drawers, stainless steel on every surface, and a glass refrigerator door that puts the food on display. Sub-Zero has built it since 2019, when it replaced the older 648PROG, and it’s still a current model.

It’s a serious piece of equipment, and it behaves differently from an ordinary refrigerator. It runs two compressors, keeps three temperature zones, and has an air purification system and a heavy glass door. Knowing what’s normal for this model makes it much easier to tell when something is actually wrong.

This guide covers the questions owners ask most about the PRO4850G: compressor noise, the air purification system, the glass door and hinges, gaskets, the ice maker, and stainless steel that discolors or pits. It’s based on Sub-Zero’s PRO Series use and care guide and its owner support pages. If the checks here don’t solve the problem, our team handles Sub-Zero refrigerator repair across metro Atlanta.

A safety note before you start. The PRO Series uses a flammable refrigerant, and Sub-Zero says the unit must be serviced only by technicians trained to handle it. Leave the sealed system, wiring, and internal parts to a professional, and don’t try to pull a built-in unit out of its opening yourself.

The Sound of Two Compressors: Decoding PRO4850G Noise

The PRO4850G has Sub-Zero’s Dual Refrigeration system. The refrigerator and the freezer each have their own refrigeration system, so fresh food odors don’t reach frozen food and ice, and the dry freezer air doesn’t pull moisture out of the fresh food section. Both compressors are at the top of the unit, behind a grille that flips up.

What’s normal

Sub-Zero lists banging, buzzing, clicking, rattling, vibration, humming, and fan motor noise as normal sounds during operation. They can seem louder in an open-concept home or at night, when the house is quiet.

The PRO4850 uses variable speed compressors for both the refrigerator and the freezer. Sub-Zero explains that a variable speed compressor always starts at high speed and slows down after about five minutes. At high speed it may give off a high-pitched whine. That’s normal, and Sub-Zero says replacing the compressor won’t change it, because every compressor of this type makes the same sound.

Run time is another thing owners worry about. Sub-Zero says there’s no set time a compressor should run. It depends on the room temperature, the unit temperature, how much food is inside and how warm it was, and how often the doors are opened. On a unit with two compressors, both can run at the same time or one after the other, which can make it seem like the unit never stops. The condenser fan can also be mistaken for the compressor.

When noise is a problem

Sub-Zero’s guidance is simple. If a noise is new, gets louder over time, or comes with warmer temperatures or other performance problems, clean the condenser first. If the noise keeps changing or getting louder after that, the unit needs service.

Signs that point to a real problem:

  • A noise that’s new or keeps getting louder
  • Food spoiling, or temperatures higher than the setting
  • Condensation, moisture, frost, or ice building up inside
  • One section warm while the other stays cold

Because the refrigerator and freezer have separate systems, a warm refrigerator with a cold freezer, or the other way around, narrows the search to one side. Before calling, check the simple causes for that section: a door or drawer that isn’t closing, a torn gasket, the setting, and a dirty condenser.

The Air Purification System

The PRO4850G has an air purification system on the back wall of the refrigerator. Sub-Zero explains that many fresh foods give off ethylene gas, a natural compound that speeds up ripening and spoilage, and the system is there to deal with it. The cartridge contains an ultraviolet lamp. Sub-Zero notes that the lamp contains mercury and should be disposed of according to local disposal laws.

The good news is that this isn’t a repair. The cartridge is an owner part, and replacing it takes a few minutes:

  1. Grasp the outside cover from the bottom and rotate it upward.
  2. Grasp the black cover from the top and rotate it downward. The cartridge pops out.
  3. Insert the new cartridge with the connector pointing down.
  4. Close the black cover, then rotate the outside cover down until it closes against the back wall.
  5. Follow the instructions on the display to reset the life cycle.

Sub-Zero says a cartridge lasts about one year. When it’s time, “Change Air Purifier” appears on the display. Touch “Snooze” to delay the reminder for 24 hours, or “Refresh” to reset the life indicator once the new cartridge is in. Replacement cartridges are sold through the Sub-Zero store, and Sub-Zero’s warranty doesn’t cover them.

If odors linger, Sub-Zero’s checklist is to replace the cartridge, clean the unit and shelves, cover food, and clean the drain pan behind the kickplate. If produce spoils fast, also check the temperature settings and make sure the doors and drawers close fully.

Sub-Zero Pro refrigerator glass door and drawers

Glass Doors, Hinges, and Seals

A door that won’t close or self-close

The glass refrigerator door is the signature feature of the PRO4850G. When a door doesn’t close as easily as it used to, pops open after closing, or no longer self-closes, Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting starts inside the unit, not with the hinge:

  • Move any food or containers that block the door.
  • Check the door liner, gasket, shelves, and drawers. Each one should be in place, closed, and not broken, torn, or bulging into the door’s path.
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the hinge.
  • Inspect the hinge for cracks, chips, missing screws, damaged plates, or broken cams. Sub-Zero says broken hinge parts should be replaced by a service technician.
  • On a new installation, the unit may not be level. Leveling follows the installation guide, or a qualified installer can check it.

If the door is still hard to close after these steps, it needs service.

A door that’s hard to open is a different symptom. Sub-Zero limits door opening force to 15 lb. If a door takes noticeably more force than that, Sub-Zero says the drain tube may be frozen or blocked, which also needs a technician.

The door alarm

The PRO4850G door alarm can be adjusted to sound after 5 to 90 seconds, and its volume and tone can be changed in the settings menu. It can’t be silenced, but it can be turned off. If the alarm sounds with the door closed, something is keeping the door from closing. Sub-Zero also suggests checking the door switch at the top of the cabinet above the handle.

Gaskets

A gasket that doesn’t seal lets warm, humid room air in. The unit runs longer, and moisture shows up as condensation, frost, or ice. Sub-Zero’s checklist for frost, condensation, or ice inside a PRO Series unit:

  • Make sure the condenser is clean.
  • Make sure each door and drawer closes properly and hasn’t been left ajar.
  • Check the gasket for rips or tears. If it’s damaged, contact service.
  • If icing is heavy, turn the unit off and use a handheld steamer to melt the ice. Don’t use a hair dryer. Wipe up the water when the ice is gone.

On the PRO3650 and PRO4850, a new gasket’s dart presses into a channel in the door or drawer, working from a corner, without stretching the gasket. Sub-Zero recommends having a torn gasket replaced by service.

Three Temperature Zones

The PRO4850G has three temperature zones: the refrigerator, the refrigerator drawers, and the freezer. Each one can be set separately in one-degree steps. The freezer temperature appears on the left display on the grille, and the two refrigerator zones appear on the right.

Sub-Zero recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. The temperature on the display is an average over time, so it won’t show the brief rise during a defrost. Sub-Zero’s refrigerator and freezer sections defrost automatically and shouldn’t need manual defrosting under normal conditions. Sub-Zero also says that storing food above 45°F is not safe.

If the unit runs warm, runs too much, or gives off too much heat, Sub-Zero’s checks are:

  • Make sure the condenser is clean.
  • Make sure each door and drawer is closing properly and hasn’t been left ajar.
  • Remember that a warmer room makes the compressors run longer.
  • If the display shows 38° and 0° but the unit isn’t cooling, it may be in showroom mode. Contact Sub-Zero Customer Care.

After any change, give the unit 24 hours to settle at the new temperature. For a unit that’s still warm after these checks, see our guide to a Sub-Zero PRO Series refrigerator not cooling.

The Ice Maker

The automatic ice maker is in the freezer, and its water passes through a filter behind the grille. Sub-Zero rates the filter for 750 gallons or one year, whichever comes first, and says to discard the first two full containers of ice after each filter change. Max Ice raises ice production by up to 30 percent for 24 hours.

If there’s no ice, Sub-Zero’s checklist is:

  • Make sure the ice maker icon appears on the freezer display.
  • Give the ice maker at least 24 hours after turning it on.
  • Make sure the freezer is near 0°F.
  • Make sure the ice container is installed properly and the ice maker arm is down.
  • Make sure water is reaching the unit.
  • Make sure the water filter was replaced within the last 12 months and is installed properly. If the home has a reverse osmosis system, the filter should be removed.

Other ice problems:

  • Blue or green ice can mean a corroding copper supply line. Sub-Zero says to have a plumber clean or replace it.
  • Black flecks in the ice mean you should stop using the ice and contact service.
  • Hollow cubes call for a condenser cleaning first, then service if they continue.
  • Bad-tasting ice can be helped by defrosting and cleaning the freezer with soap and water.

Ice that sits unused can fuse together. Discard it and let the ice maker refill. Sub-Zero says the built-in ice maker must be installed by the manufacturer or its service agent, so repairs to the water valve or the supply connection inside the unit are a service call.

Stainless Steel Discoloration and Pitting

Sub-Zero points out that stainless steel resists rust and staining far better than ordinary steel, but it isn’t stain-proof. It’s most vulnerable where there’s salt in the air, little circulation, or spills left on the surface.

To care for the exterior, Sub-Zero recommends:

  • Use a nonabrasive stainless steel cleaner on a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Bring out the luster by wiping lightly with a damp microfiber cloth, then a dry polishing chamois.
  • Always clean and polish in the direction of the grain.
  • Don’t use bleach on the exterior. Sub-Zero says it can damage and discolor stainless steel.

If a spot has already rusted or pitted, Sub-Zero says to clean it first. If cleaning doesn’t remove the rust, very carefully and lightly rub with the grain using a fine emery cloth or a fine scouring pad, then polish. If that doesn’t work, the corroded part may need to be replaced.

Inside the unit, Sub-Zero recommends a mild solution of soap, water, and baking soda, and no vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or other alcohol-based cleaners on interior surfaces.

Sub-Zero’s warranty covers stainless steel doors, panels, handles, frames, and interior surfaces for 60 days for cosmetic defects, so if you see a flaw on a new unit, report it right away.

Care That Prevents Most PRO4850G Problems

Most of the problems above trace back to a few habits:

  • Clean the condenser every 6 to 12 months. It’s behind the grille at the top. Turn off the power, wear gloves because the fins are sharp, and use a soft brush and a vacuum in the direction of the fins. Sub-Zero warns that skipping this can lead to temperature loss, mechanical failure, or damage.
  • Replace the air purification cartridge about once a year, when the display asks.
  • Replace the water filter at least once a year.
  • Keep doors and drawers clear so they close and seal every time, and leave the door alarm on.
  • Clean the stainless with the grain using the right products.
  • Before a long vacation, Sub-Zero suggests turning the unit off, emptying it, and blocking the doors open to keep the inside dry. Replace the water filter before you turn it back on.

When to Call a Technician

Sub-Zero sends owners to service when:

  • a noise changes or gets louder after the condenser is cleaned
  • one section stays warm after the door, gasket, setting, and condenser checks
  • a gasket is torn or cracked
  • a hinge is cracked or broken, or the door still won’t close properly
  • a door takes much more force than usual to open
  • the interior LED lights stay out after the door has been closed for an hour
  • there are black flecks in the ice
  • frost or ice keeps building up

The Bottom Line

The Sub-Zero PRO4850G is built to last, and most of what owners notice is normal behavior: a whine when a variable speed compressor starts, two compressors running at once, a door that needs a clear path to close. The air purification cartridge and water filter are yearly owner jobs, not repairs. Clean the condenser on schedule, keep the doors and gaskets in good shape, and care for the stainless with the grain.

When a noise keeps getting louder, one section stays warm, or a hinge or gasket is damaged, schedule Sub-Zero refrigerator repair before a small problem turns into spoiled food.

FAQ

Is compressor noise normal on the PRO4850G?

Yes, in most cases. Sub-Zero lists humming, clicking, buzzing, and vibration as normal. The PRO4850 uses variable speed compressors, which start at high speed with a high-pitched whine and slow down after about five minutes. A noise that’s new or keeps getting louder after a condenser cleaning needs service.

Why does my PRO4850G seem to run all the time?

Sub-Zero says there’s no set run time. Room temperature, how much food is inside, and how often the doors open all affect it. With two compressors, both can run at once or one after the other, which can make the unit seem to run nonstop. A dirty condenser makes it run longer.

Do I need a technician to replace the air purification cartridge?

No. The cartridge is on the back wall of the refrigerator, and Sub-Zero’s guide shows owners how to replace it. It lasts about a year, and “Change Air Purifier” appears on the display when it’s due. The lamp inside contains mercury, so dispose of the old cartridge according to local laws.

Why won’t my PRO4850G glass door close by itself?

Sub-Zero says to check for food, shelves, drawers, or a gasket blocking the door, and anything in the way of the hinge. A cracked or broken hinge needs a technician. On a new installation, the unit may not be level.

How do I remove rust spots from the stainless steel?

Sub-Zero says to clean the spot first. If the rust stays, very lightly rub with the grain using a fine emery cloth or a fine scouring pad, then polish. Don’t use bleach. If that doesn’t work, the part may need to be replaced.

What temperature should a PRO4850G be set to?

Sub-Zero recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. The refrigerator drawers have their own setting. After changing a setting, give the unit 24 hours to settle.
