Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker built into a kitchen island with the door open and a full ice bin

Sub-Zero’s undercounter ice makers, like the 15-inch UC-15I and its pump version, the UC-15IP, are built to keep ice coming all evening. But they work in demanding spots: under a bar counter, in a basement, or in an outdoor kitchen. They also depend on a water supply, a drain, and a clean condenser.

This guide covers why a Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker stops making ice, why it leaks or makes small cubes, and which checks you can do yourself before you call. It uses Sub-Zero’s own troubleshooting pages for the UC-15I family and the Designer Series Undercounter guide. If your checks don’t solve it, our team handles Sub-Zero ice maker repair across metro Atlanta.

A safety note before you start. Turn the power off before you clean the condenser or change the water filter. If water is leaking out of the unit, shut off its water supply first. Work on the refrigeration system, the water valve, and the wiring belongs with a trained technician.

How a Sub-Zero Undercounter Ice Maker Works

A dedicated undercounter ice maker isn’t the same as a freezer ice maker, and the difference explains many of the “problems” owners call about.

  • It makes a lot of ice. Sub-Zero says the UC-15I(P) can produce up to 50 pounds of ice a day and store up to 25 pounds. It uses about one gallon of water per hour.
  • The bin isn’t refrigerated. Sub-Zero is clear about this. Ice in the bin slowly melts, and the melt water drains away. The ice maker keeps producing to replace it. That’s normal, and it’s why the unit needs a working drain.
  • It needs time to start. After the unit is turned on, or after a manual defrost, Sub-Zero says it may take up to 24 hours before you see ice.
  • Water moves inside it. Sub-Zero notes that it’s normal for water to spray, drip, and run inside the ice maker assembly while it works.

Sub-Zero makes several undercounter ice options. The UC-15I and UC-15IO are gravity-drain models. The UC-15IP and UC-15IPO have a built-in drain pump. The UC-15IO is approved for outdoor use. Sub-Zero’s newer Designer undercounter line includes the DEU1550I ice maker. Some Designer undercounter combination units and drawer models also have an ice maker inside a freezer compartment, which works more like a refrigerator ice maker.

Why the Ice Maker Isn’t Making Ice

Sub-Zero’s UC-15I troubleshooting page lists these checks. Work through them in order.

1. Settings and the delay function

  • Make sure the ice maker is on, and that no indicator lights are lit on the control panel.
  • Check the delay function. UC-15I ice makers can delay ice production for two, four, or eight hours. Pressing the Delay key once, twice, or three times starts a delay, and the matching light comes on. The machine won’t make ice until the delay ends. Press the key a fourth time to cancel it. Someone may have pressed it by accident.
  • Give it 24 hours. If the unit was just turned on, cleaned, or defrosted, wait a full day before you decide it isn’t working.

2. The water filter

The UC-15I ships with a water filter installed. Sub-Zero says to replace it every six months, after a long shutdown, or when the red REPLACE FILTER light comes on. A clogged filter can slow or stop the water the ice maker needs.

To change it, turn the power off, open the ice maker door, and find the filter on the bottom left. Turn the cartridge a quarter turn counterclockwise until it pops out. Remove the blue cap from the new filter and install it the same way. Then press the CLEAN key for 6 seconds to reset the filter light, and discard the first batch of ice.

Use a Sub-Zero filter: Sub-Zero says third-party filters haven’t been tested and might lead to poor performance.

3. The water supply and pressure

The water has to be on. Sub-Zero lists the usual places to find the shut-off valve: under the kitchen sink, under the unit behind the kickplate, in an adjacent cabinet, or in the basement near the water filtration system.

Low or no water pressure can stop ice production. Sub-Zero describes a simple check: pour a cup of water behind the ice maker curtain. If the spray pattern changes, the unit isn’t getting enough water pressure.

If you have a reverse osmosis system or a well, and ice production stops often, Sub-Zero suggests adding a pressure booster or regulator. Talk to your reverse osmosis provider or a plumber.

4. The condenser

Sub-Zero says to clean the condenser on undercounter models every six to twelve months, and to clean it if it hasn’t been done in that time. A dirty condenser makes the unit work harder and can lead to temperature loss or mechanical failure. On undercounter units, the condenser sits behind the kickplate. Turn the unit off first, then remove the screws on both sides of the kickplate with a Phillips screwdriver. Sub-Zero notes that temperatures can take up to 24 hours to return to normal after cleaning.

5. Heat and sunlight

Because the bin isn’t refrigerated, Sub-Zero says high room temperatures or a spot that gets a lot of direct sunlight can make the ice melt quickly. It can look like the ice maker has stopped when it’s really losing ice as fast as it makes it.

For the outdoor UC-15IO, Sub-Zero gives an approved range of 50°F to 110°F. Outside that range, Sub-Zero says performance may suffer and no repair can fix it until the temperature is back in range.

6. The drain

If water is standing in the ice maker, Sub-Zero says to check that the drain line isn’t kinked or looped. On gravity-drain models, the drain hose has to slope down from the outlet at the back of the unit. Sub-Zero’s installation notes call for a fall of 1/4 inch for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The drain connection is about 5 inches above the floor. If the drain point is higher than that, a pump model is needed.

Both types must drain to an open site drain, with no way for drain water to back up. Sub-Zero warns against connecting directly to a drain line, because bacteria from the drain can contaminate the ice maker.

7. Power

Sub-Zero says the unit must get proper voltage and shouldn’t run on a generator.

8. Cleaning and sanitizing

A dirty ice maker makes less ice. Sub-Zero says the parts that touch the water system should be cleaned and sanitized every six months, whatever water filtration you use. The cleaner removes limescale, calcium from hard water, and other mineral deposits. The sanitizer removes algae and slime.

Use only the cleaner and sanitizer made for your model. Sub-Zero says the DEU1550I(P) and UC-15I(P) use the same products, which aren’t interchangeable with the cleaner for the older 315I, and that using the wrong one could cause damage and void the warranty. Sub-Zero doesn’t recommend bleach or any other cleaner. Vinegar is a last resort only, at one part vinegar to ten parts water.

If you’ve done all of these checks, wait 24 hours. If there’s still no ice, Sub-Zero says the unit needs service.

Water Leaking From the Unit

Remember that water moving inside the ice maker is normal. Water coming out of the unit isn’t. Sub-Zero’s steps:

  1. Turn off the water supply at the shut-off valve.
  2. Make sure the water filter is installed securely.
  3. If the unit is newly installed and there’s a lot of water, contact the installer or a service technician.
  4. If water is leaking from the plumbing connections, call a plumber.
  5. Check that the drain line is installed correctly and isn’t blocked.

If none of that stops it, the unit needs service.

Freezer-Compartment Ice Makers: Designer Undercounter and Drawer Models

Some Sub-Zero undercounter units have an ice maker inside a freezer compartment instead of a dedicated ice machine. These include Designer undercounter combination models and drawer models such as the ID-24FI, ID-30FI, and ID-30CI.

These work like a refrigerator’s ice maker, so the checks are different:

  • Freezer temperature. Sub-Zero recommends a 0°F freezer setting and says the freezer should be at or below 5°F for ice production. If it’s warmer, the freezer itself needs attention first.
  • The ice maker is on. On Designer undercounter models, you turn it on in the Settings menu and choose On, Max Ice, or Off. Max Ice increases production by up to 30 percent for 24 hours.
  • The bin is seated. Sub-Zero says the ice bin should be installed level and in place. On some models, the bin presses the ice maker switch.
  • The arm is down. If the ice maker arm is up, production stops. Don’t force a stuck arm. Sub-Zero says it can break.
  • Give it time. Wait 24 hours after turning it on, and discard the first few batches after a new installation.

There’s one more difference. Sub-Zero says its Designer drawer models, including the ID-24FI, ID-30CI, and ID-30FI, don’t have a built-in water filter. If you want filtered water for ice, a home in-line filter can be added. If you have one, check whether it has expired.

Outdoor and Winter Care

An outdoor ice maker needs a little extra care. Sub-Zero says to winterize outdoor products when temperatures drop to freezing, or the water line and water valve can be damaged. For the UC-15I, Sub-Zero says water valve service during winterizing should be done by a service technician. Don’t use antifreeze in the ice maker or water line. When the unit goes back into service, install a new water filter.

When to Call a Technician

The checks above cover most of what an owner can do: settings, the filter, the water supply, the condenser, the drain, and cleaning.

Call a technician when:

  • there’s still no ice 24 hours after all the checks
  • water is leaking out of the unit after the drain, filter, and plumbing checks
  • the unit shuts off by itself or shows indicator lights you can’t clear
  • an ice maker arm or other part is broken
  • the freezer compartment in a drawer or combination unit won’t stay cold

Have the model and serial number ready. They’re on the unit’s serial tag.

FAQ

Why did my Sub-Zero UC-15I stop making ice?

Start with Sub-Zero’s checklist: make sure it’s on and no delay is set, replace the filter if the light is on, check the water supply and pressure, clean the condenser, and check the drain line. Then wait 24 hours. If there’s still no ice, it needs service.

How much ice should a Sub-Zero undercounter ice maker make?

Sub-Zero says the UC-15I(P) can make up to 50 pounds of ice a day and store up to 25 pounds. Because the bin isn’t refrigerated, some ice always melts and drains away, so the bin won’t stay packed.

How often should I change the UC-15I water filter?

Every six months, after a long shutdown, or when the red REPLACE FILTER light comes on. Use a Sub-Zero filter, reset the light by holding the CLEAN key for 6 seconds, and discard the first batch of ice.

Is it normal for my undercounter ice maker to drip water?

Inside the unit, yes. Sub-Zero says water normally sprays, drips, and runs inside the ice maker assembly, and ice melts in the bin. Water leaking out of the unit isn’t normal. Turn off the water and check the filter, drain line, and plumbing connections.

Can I clean my Sub-Zero ice maker with bleach or vinegar?

Sub-Zero doesn’t recommend bleach. Use the cleaner and sanitizer made for your model every six months. Vinegar is a last resort only, mixed one part to ten parts water.

Why does my outdoor UC-15IO stop making ice on hot days?

Sub-Zero approves the UC-15IO for outdoor use from 50°F to 110°F. The bin isn’t refrigerated, so heat and direct sun melt ice fast. Clean the condenser and keep the unit out of strong direct sun. If it still struggles within that range, have it checked.
